Learn the history of Samaná
Samaná has a rich history that dates back to pre-Columbian times when the island was inhabited by the Taínos. During the 19th century, Samaná played an important role in the country's history.
In 1824, Haitian forces invaded the region and occupied it for more than 20 years. Samaná became a refuge for many Dominicans seeking to escape the occupation. In 1844, the Dominican Republic declared its independence from Haiti, and Samaná was one of the first provinces to join the new country.
Land of Pirates and Treasures
Samaná has a history linked to pirates. The bay was a target for privateers and pirates in search of treasure. Francis Drake and Jean Lafitte found refuge in the area, hiding loot in the caves and mangroves.
These stories and legends persist, with rumors of treasures still hidden. Although the pirates have disappeared, their legacy lives on in the memory of the region. Visitors can explore the bay, admiring its beauty and evoking the times when pirates ruled these waters.
